South Lake Champlain Education Center
In May 2005, the Poultney Mettowee Natural Resource Conservation District was proud to open the South Lake Champlain Education Center in Poultney, Vermont. Thanks to funding from the Lake Champlain Basin Program and the support of the Town of Poultney, a place now exists for the public to learn about their local watershed, find information and advice, and for student educational programs. Currently the Center includes local maps, books and publications about issues affecting the Poultney Mettowee watershed and Lake Champlain. The Center is located immediately adjacent to the Poultney Educational Trail, which includes 4.5 acres behind the building, where visitors can find a short walking trail, a vernal pool, a released apple orchard, and benches to enjoy the local flora and fauna. In Spring 2007, Green Mountain College students will be hosting tours of the Center and the Poultney Educational Trail for local elementary school students. The Center also contains the offices of the Southern Vermont Nutrient Management Program.
